How to Stop Meta Using Your Instagram Photos in Muse Image
Muse Image can reference public Instagram photos without notice. Here's the exact opt-out toggle, who's affected, and what Meta has already walked back.

Meta's new Muse Image model launched with a feature nobody asked for: it can reference public Instagram photos to ground its generations — real people's likenesses and visual styles included — without notifying the people in them. The backlash was immediate, and Meta has already pulled the most controversial variant of the feature. Here's what's actually happening and how to opt out.
What Muse Image does with Instagram content
- Muse Image draws on public Instagram content for "social context" — it can incorporate the likeness or visual style of public accounts referenced in a prompt, without anyone uploading a photo.
- Private accounts are excluded by default. If your account is private, Muse Image can't use your content.
- You are not notified when your public content is referenced. That's the consent gap privacy groups flagged within hours of launch — Privacy International warned it treats "people's online photos and personal data as content that can be reused without explicit permission."
- After the initial backlash, Meta pulled the most contested capability (prompting directly on Instagram accounts). The underlying social-context feature still ships.
The opt-out, step by step
If your Instagram account is public and you want out:
- Open Instagram and go to Settings.
- Select Sharing and Reuse.
- Toggle off: "Allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta."
That single toggle covers both content reuse and Meta's AI features, including Muse Image.
The blunter instrument: switching your account to private removes your content from Muse Image's reach entirely, by default, no toggle needed.
What opting out does — and doesn't — do
- ✅ Stops Muse Image from using your content in other people's generations going forward.
- ✅ Applies across Meta's AI features, not just Muse Image.
- ❌ Doesn't retroactively affect anything already generated.
- ❌ Doesn't opt you out of Meta training AI on your data more broadly — that's governed by separate regional policies (EU/UK users have additional objection rights under GDPR).
The bigger picture
The Instagram-grounding feature is a preview of where platform-owned AI is going: the model's edge isn't just quality, it's access to the platform's data. It's worth knowing what the model actually is — see What is Muse Image? — and it's worth remembering you can get comparable image quality from models that don't touch your social graph at all: here are the alternatives, all runnable in the Yix generator.
